Ep 136: Prepper Musings/Random Thoughts

Ep 136_Random Thoughts/ Prepper Rationale

  • Hurricane Issac has made landfall.  Louisiana is filling with water.  Hundreds of thousands are without power.  That’s why we prep.  We prep for the common reasons that make sense.  I don’t worry about armageddon or nuclear holocaust… but tornadoes, floods earthquakes, HURRICANES, industrial accidents, blizzards, ice storms, job loss and a host of others DO concern me.  THAT’S WHY I PREP.
  • Many forecast continued economic hardships in the near future.  I have decided to focus my investments more on prepping and do a little less in the way of annuity contributions.  I am focusing on improving my store of preps.  Money I have in my retirement accounts will stay there, but I won’t be putting a lot more in.  I think another year’s supply of food would be a better investment for my family right now.
  • I talk about a great tool for stripping copper wire from it’s metallic conduit shell.  It’s called a roto-stripper and you have to hear what I learned about using one.
  • A lot of people want to get through a situation as though it (the disaster) never happened.  Everything is NOT Normal…THAT’S THE POINT!!!
  • Normalcy bias is defined and discussed.  Just so you know…normalcy bias is underestimating a disaster and its potential effects.
  1. It causes people to react to the situation inappropriately, too slowly, or not at all
  2. It causes people to paint the situation in  too positive of a light
  3. There’s a difference between being positive in a disaster and being delusional.
  • Somebody suggested I trade-in my Suburban with 130000 miles on it for a car with better gas mileage.  Financially, keeping my old truck is a MUCH better financial decision.  It’s paid for, it gets 16 miles to a gallon, and I drive 4 miles roundtrip to and from work.  Buying a new car wouldn’t make sense.  I hope you see that logic.  Say my payments on a new car are $300/mo.  That’s $3600 a year in payments.  I wont spend that in GAS going to and from work in a year.  Are you kidding me?
  • I cast a wide net and discuss a few other relevant items in today’s show. Stay tuned…
